Apologies to Anjanette Young, mixed media, 2021, 45"x16" by Ameera Pernebsati Lys

$600.00

Anjanette Young is a social worker living in Chicago whose home was broken into by Chicago police based on a warrant for the wrong address and for a person who was already in police custody. She was changing her clothes after work and was not allowed to dress when they entered. She repeated that they had the wrong house over 40 times, words which are written into the canvas reflecting the number of times she spoke it during the incident. The work is an attempt to restore dignity by wrapping her in indigo-dyed silks. The work was featured at the Riverside Arts Center in 2021, Lys Arts in 2022 and the Haitian-American Museum of Chicago in 2023. Series is currently available for viewing at the Haitian-American Museum of Chicago until August 30, 2023.
